Anthropic plans to commit 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund that could be worth billions of dollars as the AI company grows. The fund may support nonprofits, people affected by AI-driven job disruption and other public interest initiatives. The company’s board could approve additional share allocations as its valuation rises.

Loading...×Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI, is setting aside 5% of its shares for a new public benefit fund that could eventually grow as the artificial intelligence company becomes more valuable with time. The money could direct billions of dollars in order to support non-profits, help people affected by AI job losses and address the bigger economic impact of the technology.Announced on October 18, the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund will hold the company's shares and give it another way to support public causes beyond the work already carried out within its business. However, the initial commitment from the company is subject to stockholder approval.
Who could benefit from Anthropic's fund?
Anthropic has not announced specific beneficiaries or funding allocations. But the company said the fund could make large donations to existing nonprofits or distribute money directly to particular groups of people.
Also, as businesses adopt AI tools, concerns have grown over how automation could affect workers and the availability of jobs. So, the company try to cushion the impact of AI on employment.
Anthropic has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing the effects of AI on the labour market. The company said in its announcement, "AI may generate enormous economic value, but it could also cause instability for many workers."
It added that, given the pace of AI development, "bolder approaches may be needed."
How much money could the fund receive?
The value of the fund will be tied to the valuation of Anthropic and the shares it is allocated. The company has committed an initial 5% stake, with its board able to approve an additional 2% allocation for every 50% increase in its valuation above a specified baseline. These additional allocations are discretionary, rather than automatic. Anthropic has not yet disclosed the valuation milestones that would lead to consideration of further contributions.
Anthropic said it would provide more information about the fund's structure and governance in the coming months.
Why has Anthropic chosen an LLC structure?
The fund will operate as a wholly owned limited liability company (LLC), rather than a traditional tax-exempt nonprofit. Anthropic said this structure would allow it to pursue different forms of giving, including donations and direct distributions. The company has also stated that the equity held by the fund will not be used for lobbying or political contributions in the US or internationally.
The new initiative builds on existing commitments by Anthropic's founders and employees. The co-founders have pledged to donate 80% of their personal equity holdings, while an employee programme matches shares pledged by participating staff. Around half of Anthropic employees take part in that programme.
Anthropic President Daniela Amodei said on LinkedIn: "I'm excited both about the good work this will make possible and the way this approach strengthens the direct relationship between our commercial business and our public benefit mission."
